Cisterna di Latina is located at the gates of the Pontine Marshes, in a largely flat area overlooked by the Lepini Mountains and the Alban Hills.
The origins of Cisterna are very ancient and date back to the 9th century BC.
Located on the Appian Way, along St. Paul’s route to Rome, it probably arose from the Roman settlement of Tres Tabernae.
The city experienced development and splendor under the rule of the Caetani family who expanded its territory up to Lake Fogliano.
In 1944, during the Allied landing at Anzio, it suffered almost total destruction and the disappearance of the old city.
Points of interest in the city include the sixteenth-century Palazzo Caetani, with several frescoes by Federico and Taddeo Zuccari and the magnificent caves, the Biondi Fountain dedicated to the triumph over malaria, and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, characterized by ceramic decorations on the portal and apse.
